Greenlight VR CEO Clifton Dawson says in his research firm’s last broad consumer study, HTC trailed the other major virtual reality companies in unaided awareness by a significant margin.
“In recent months, we’ve seen HTC make concerted efforts to begin promoting the Vive to consumers, but Mr. Gattis’ departure could impede the company’s efforts to raise awareness for the Vive among the general public, developer community, and potential strategic partners.”
Why ‘Rock Band VR’ Matters to Facebook and Oculus, John Gaudiosi, Fortune, December 8, 2015
Clifton Dawson, CEO at research firm Greenlight VR, says exclusive games like Rock Band provide Oculus an avenue to reach a much larger and diverse audience.
“We know that female and young consumers who are likely to purchase head-mounted displays in the near-term are particularly drawn to musical VR experiences.”

Microsoft Hosts Contest To Solicit Your HoloLens App Ideas, Dan Heilman, Sci-Tech Today, December 2, 2015
We reached out to Sean Whitmore, research analyst with Greenlight VR, who told us that for an unproven technology such as augmented reality, soliciting non-technical ideas could be an ideal way for Microsoft to market its new product and build brand awareness.
“This type of consumer engagement could foster not only more awareness of the tech — and inevitable consumer release — but also allow those with no technical expertise to contribute and therefore bring fresher ideas to the table,” Whitmore said.

Landmark is Launching a VR Social Platform in 2016, and Here’s Why, John Gaudiosi, Fortune, October 15, 2015
And Landmark has the right idea, according to Clifton Dawson, CEO of research market firm Greenlight VR.
“While there are many companies working on social and metaverse experiences, we think Landmark has the unique opportunity to leverage its global relationships with entertainment and consumer brands to create an attraction-filled experience,” says Dawson. “We also think most brands, who may not have a VR content strategy for a few years, will be attracted to this concept because it will provide a low-risk way for them to extend their brands into the emerging medium.”
Dawson believes as VR headset sales grow over the next few years, Landmark could have tens of millions of active users by 2018.
Analysts Say HMD’s Priced Over $400 Will Slow Consumer Adoption, Nick Ochoa, UploadVR, October 15, 2015
We’re starting to hear rumors that the much anticipated Oculus HMD will cost significantly more than $350. Greenlight VR, a market research and analyst firm that focuses exclusively on virtual reality, thinks that HMD prices higher than $400 will cause many people to skip purchasing a headset altogether, possibly slowing or preventing the development of a large consumer market.
After studying the results from Greenlight VR’s comprehensive study of 2,300 U.S. consumers, produced jointly with marketing research firm Touchstone Research, only 40% of respondents report a willingness to spend greater than $400 on an HMD. While the questions were not linked to any particular HMD, consumers did express price as a possible concern in the survey’s open comments section.
Why Lionsgate is Making a ‘John Wick’ VR Game, John Gaudiosi, Fortune, October 14, 2015
Clifton Dawson, CEO of research firm Greenlight VR, expects global VR head-mounted display sales to exceed $140M in 2016 HMD sales, largely driven by low-cost HMDs in China, which have been selling since late 2014.
“We see the availability of popular Hollywood licenses such as John Wick and Adventure Time in VR content as particularly important to the near-term growth and sustainability of the industry,” Dawson says. “That’s because in the absence of an ad-supported revenue models, we think compelling titles will encourage consumers to purchase hardware and directly pay for content. We believe that major Hollywood trademarks will eventually be in VR, since companies with large asset portfolios, such as Sony, Disney, and Fox, are major stakeholders in the industry.”
Fore! How This Company is Using VR to Sell Golf Clubs, John Gaudiosi, Fortune, October 13, 2015
According to Clifton Dawson, CEO of research firm Greenlight VR, there’s a reason consumer brands like like TaylorMade are experimenting with 360-degree video as a new advertising medium.
“In one recent study, we analyzed the performance of 360-video across categories and found that branded VR content generates 15-20 times the number of views on platforms like YouTube and Vrideo,” Dawson says. “We believe this is due to the multi-channel distribution strategy employed and additional earned media consumer brands generate with their campaigns. We think 360-video advertising is one of the biggest untapped opportunities in the consumer VR market.”
How Syfy is Using Virtual Reality in Real Life, John Gaudiosi, Fortune, October 8, 2015
Clifton Dawson, CEO of research firm Greenlight VR, believes these types of VR marketing campaigns are extremely important for introducing mainstream consumers to virtual reality.
“We know these types of marketing tactics can also be very effective with consumers,” Dawson says, referencing a recent U.S. consumer survey that was done in conjunction with Touchstone Research. “The overwhelming majority of the 2,300 consumers demonstrated enthusiasm when we asked them how they’d feel if they were given a Google Cardboard headset to for viewing a VR brand experience.”
That’s good news for Syfy and NBCUniversal.
Microsoft Debuts $3,000 HoloLens Developer Kit, Dan Heilman, NewsFactor Network, October 7, 2015
We reached out to Jeremy Joachim, an analyst at Greenlight VR, who told us that although the price tag of the developer kit might turn away hobbyists and even some professional developers, industries involving data analytics and data visualizations will see lots of potential in HoloLens.
“One of AR’s (augmented reality) biggest advantages over other computing platforms lies in its ability to surpass gaming applications,” said Joachim. “I think it opens up the market for some professional developers and SMBs in industries like architecture, engineering, and health care, where the expense of integrated hardware, software, and professional development services has historically been cost-prohibitive.”
Greenlight VR and Virtual Umbrella Reveal European VR Ecosystem Map, Jamie Feltham, VRFocus, October 1, 2015
The virtual reality (VR) has grown at an alarming rate over the past 3 years. Since Oculus VR passed its historic Kickstarter campaign for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) an incredible number of developers, hardware companies and others have pledged support for this new technology. Keeping track of exactly who is working in VR is an almost impossible task, but it’s one that market intelligence company Greenlight VR and VR marketing and PR agency Virtual Umbrella are tackling. Today the pair have revealed a European VR Ecosystem Map, detailing all companies within the region working in VR.
